The West Bengal government imposed a ban on the sale and bursting of fireworks during the upcoming festivals, taking into account the health of Covid-19 patients in isolation and air pollution across the state. However, only green crackers may be used.

These crackers can only be used for a 2 hour window. Crackers can be popped on Diwali from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., on Chatt Puja from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., 35 minutes on Christmas and New Year’s Eve from 11:55 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.

According to an order from the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, the ban was imposed in accordance with the 2018 Supreme Court ruling.

The decision was made bearing in mind that “the bursting of fireworks will release harmful chemicals that have serious effects on the respiratory health of vulnerable groups” and can worsen the health of Covid-19 patients who remain in domestic isolation.
