The heads of state and government of the twenty largest economies in the world gathered on Saturday in Rome, Italy for a two-day summit on climate change, Covid-19 and economic recovery.
Among the leaders of the G20 summit was India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who interacted with several world leaders such as US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Here’s everything you need to know about India’s participation in the G20 summit.
1st GLOBAL FIGHT AGAINST COVID
Indian Foreign Minister Harsh Vardhan Shringla said at a press conference in Rome that Prime Minister Modi had told others at the G20 summit that India was ready to produce five billion doses of Covid-19 vaccine by the end of 2022.
“We also believe that the World Health Organization’s emergency approval for Covaxin would facilitate this process of assisting other countries,” he added.
At the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s contribution to the global fight against the Covid pandemic and spoke about the country’s vision of “One Earth, One Health”.
2. DIVERSIFICATION OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN
At the summit, PM Modi invited the world’s largest countries to make India their partner in economic recovery and supply chain diversification, said Harsh Vardhan Shringla.
Prime Minister Modi stressed that despite the challenges of the pandemic, India remains a “trustworthy partner in the context of reliable supply chains”. He emphasized the need for resilient global supply chains and spoke about India’s economic reforms.
3. PM MODI INTERACTED WITH WORLDWIDE LEADERS
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with world leaders including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Photos of it were tweeted from the prime minister’s office.

4. FRUITFUL MEETINGS WITH THE FRENCH PRESIDENT, SINGAPORE PM
Prime Minister Modi’s office tweeted Saturday night that Prime Minister Modi had had “fruitful” talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

During the talks between India and Singapore, the office tweeted a picture with the caption: “A fruitful meeting between Prime Ministers Modi and Lee Hsien Loong in Rome. The two leaders checked the full range of friendly relations between India and Singapore. “
5. IMPORTANT GLOBAL DEVELOPMENTS
The opening session on Saturday focused on global health and the economy, with a meeting on the sidelines between US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to discuss Iran’s nuclear program .
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi called for greater efforts to provide vaccines to poorer countries in the world.
On the subject of climate change, Reuters took action a draft communiqué showing that major countries likely “tightened only marginally previous commitments on climate change while failing to set tough new targets that activists believe are essential to averting environmental disasters”.
On the first day of the summit, the heads of state and government also endorsed a minimum tax rate that all countries can levy on companies from 2023. This deal is intended to deter large corporations from parking profits in tax havens.
6. WHAT’S NEXT ON THE AGENDA
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits the Trevi Fountain in Rome on Sunday. He will then attend a G20 meeting on climate change and the environment. This is followed by a bilateral meeting with the Spanish Prime Minister.
PM Modi will attend a sustainable development session and a side event on Supply Chain Resilience hosted by US President Joe Biden.
On the sidelines of the summit on Sunday, he is expected to hold further bilateral meetings.
After the G20, PM Modi will travel to Glasgow on Sunday to attend the summit of 26th Conference of the Parties (COP-26) on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
7. WHAT IS G20?
The G20 is a leading global forum that brings together the world’s major economies. Its members account for more than 80 percent of global GDP, 75 percent of world trade and 60 percent of the world’s population.
Italy has held the G20 presidency since December last year. The forum has met every year since 1999 and has included an annual summit meeting since 2008 with the participation of the respective heads of state and government. This year the theme of the summit was “People, Planet, Prosperity”.

Ahead of the summit, India’s Foreign Minister Harsh Vardhan Shringla said the G20 remains a valuable forum for India’s engagement with the world’s major economies and for setting trends and norms for global economic development and recovery.
