His inaugural 70-value partnership with Captain Aaron Finch laid a solid foundation for the chase before Steve Smith joined the action, adding another 50 runs for the third wicket with Warner to bring the Aussies closer to the finish line.

Warner got out against the run of the game in the 15th round, but the damage was already done by that point. Smith and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis added the finishing touches and finished the game with 18 balls.

Smith remained undefeated at 28, while Stoinis scored a quickfire 16, not from 7 balls. Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva was Lanka’s standout bowler with 2 wickets while skipper Dasun Shanaka got one, but in a lost cause.

Earlier, Mitchell Starc tossed the “ball of the tournament” when Australia caused a collapse in the middle of the inning but couldn’t stop Sri Lanka from scoring a decent 154 for 6 after Finch won the throw and settled in Dubai to be the first to bowl.

Starc (2/27 in 4 overs) rolled out a brilliant comeback delivery in the form of a vicious inswinging Yorker after being hit for a six that saw the end of Kusal Perera (35 balls out of 25) when Sri Lanka’s four quick Wickets for 16. lost runs to 94 for 5 from a relatively strong 78 for 1 in a little less than three overs.

Bhanuka Rakaspakse (33 not out of 26 balls), then into the weak link of the Australian attack by Marcus Stoinis (0/35 in 3 overs) to bring Sri Lanka back on track, which looked unlikely after Starc’s second spell. But their bottom line was about 15-20 runs below what they would have liked to have done to challenge the Aussies.
