A dominant English team got their ICC T20 World Cup 2021 campaign off to a perfect start on Saturday when they beat defending champions West Indies to the top of Group 1 in the Super 12 stage.
The game was expected to be an exciting battle between the flair of the West Indies and a capable attack by England, but after a terrible batting effort by both teams, it turned into a no-contest.
England ended the 6-wicket triumph over the Windies after bowing them out for 55, the third-lowest total in T20 World Cup history and the second-lowest in format for WI, with Jos Buttler leading the way with the bat to one early end of the trial in Abu Dhabi.
ENG vs. WI, T20 World Cup: Highlights
West Indies tried their best to delay the inevitable by snapping up 4 English wickets in quick succession while the batsmen of both sides continued to fight on a slow and spinning court at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Obed McCoy poured his heart out for the defending champion and picked 2 wickets for 24 runs from his 4 overs in power play, but the total was just too low for the West Indies to defend the Three Lions and pose any kind of threat.
Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali flopped the bat, but England still managed to hit the pathetic target in the xx captain Eoin Morgan’s decision to appear first on the throw.
Leg spinner Adil Rashid was the standout bowler for England, but it was Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali who caused the damage with Evin Lewis and Lendl Simmons wickets, respectively.
The two-time champions never really recovered from 9 for 2 and lost wickets on a regular basis.
West Indies was eventually thrown for 55 in 14.2 overs, with Adil Rashid finishing with his best T20I numbers of 4 wickets for 2 runs from his 2.2 overs. Chris Gayle (13) was the only batter who got double digits.
Moeen Ali and Tymal Mills each grabbed a couple of wickets while Woakes and Chris Jordan got a peace to round off the 2010 champions’ perfect bowling performance.
