The Mexican authorities discovered ten bodies on Thursday in the central state of Zacatecas, the site of a territorial conflict between drug cartels – nine of them hanging on an overpass.

The state security agency Zacatecas said in a statement that the bodies were found in Ciudad Cuauhtemoc, about 550 kilometers north of Mexico City. The tenth body was found on the sidewalk. All of the victims were men.

The new generation cartels of Sinaloa and Jalisco are fighting for control in the state, which is a major transit point for drugs, particularly the powerful synthetic pain reliever fentanyl, which is making its way north to the US border.

Cartels sometimes display such public corpses to mock their rivals or authorities and to scare local residents.

In the first nine months of the year, there were more than 25,000 homicides in Mexico, according to federal data, a number 3.4 percent fewer than in the same period last year
