The fire broke out in an old school building in the Bulgarian village of Royak, which was being converted into a retirement home.

Nine elderly people died when a fire broke out in a nursing home in eastern Bulgaria on Monday, officials said.
The fire broke out around 6:00 p.m. (1600 GMT) in an old school building that was being converted into a retirement home in the village of Royak, fire chief Tihomir Totev told public broadcaster BNT television.
“Unfortunately, nine out of 58 people who were in the house at the time of the fire lost their lives,” he said.
The other residents have been evacuated from the building and some of them required medical attention because they inhaled smoke, the official added.
Nursing home manager Milena Mazurik confirmed the number of victims to the private bTV broadcaster, adding that this was “the final number of victims”.
None of the officers commented on the possible cause of the fire that struck the roof of the building before it was extinguished by six fire engines dispatched to the scene.
Three patients died in early November in a fire that broke out in a coronavirus ward in the southeastern Bulgarian city of Sliven.
