Congress eyes women power in UP, to reach out to 5 crore voters ahead of polls

Congress will go Full throttle with its “women-centered” strategy as it plans to reach 5 crore female voters in the high-polluter Uttar Pradesh in the next two months.

Party sources said this massive outreach program in Uttar Pradesh was part of the Congress “Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon” campaign.

Congress is planning a series of townhall programs in which the party’s general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will interact with women. Padyatras, door-to-door campaigns, Nukkar-Sabhas across Uttar Pradesh, and digital outreach programs will also soon be introduced by Congress.

Sources said around 7,500 female workers would be part of a “Ladki Hoon Brigade” in Uttar Pradesh that would reach out to rural women and inform them of Priyanka Gandhi’s “pratigyas” (pledges) when Congress came to power comes.

“This is the first time a political party in this state has carried out such a massive initiative to reach out to women voters. Soon we plan to start this campaign where our leaders and workers take about five million women into the state and tell them about our pratigyas, “Aradhana Misra, chairman of the Congress Legislative Party in Uttar Pradesh, told India Today TV.

Recently in Lucknow, Priyanka Gandhi announced that Congress will give 40 percent of tickets to female candidates (160 candidates) in the UP polls. The assembly in Uttar Pradesh consists of 403 seats.

“The candidacy of 40% women is not a consideration by Priyanka ji and Congress, but a well-thought-out strategy,” said Aradhana Misra.

Former union minister Salman Khurshid said the constitution grants women equal rights, including fighting against elections. However, reality tells a different story.

Khurshid, who heads the UP Congress Manifesto Committee, said, “The big question is how to ensure gender equality in the political arena? Priyankaji showed courage and took this step, manifesto and election campaign). “

The establishment of gender equality also has an electoral aspect.

A cursory look at the election dates tells an interesting story about the reasons behind wooing women voters. About 46 percent of Uttar Pradesh voters are women. In the 2017 UP assembly elections, more women (63.25%) voted than men (59.5%). Around 53.7 percent of female candidates emerged successfully from Panchayat surveys in July 2021.

Uttar Pradesh National AICC Secretary and Co-Leader Dheeraj Gujar said: “Slowly but surely women have emerged as silent, dominant voters in the state. More and more women are going to polling stations to exercise their voting rights. In order to bring about change in society and politics, we need to get more women into active politics. “

Sources said Congress will soon publish its women-centered manifesto in UP. Priyanka Gandhi has already made announcements, including three free gas bottles, free bus tickets for women and smartphones, and scooters for girls.
