Schools in Delhi reopened to all classes on Monday after being closed for 19 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Students were seen in Delhi early in the morning, but not before they were thermally shielded and their hands were sprayed with disinfectant.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) announced last week that schools would reopen for all classes from November 1st.

Some schools have decided to reopen after the festival week. Even after the reopening, teaching and learning would continue in both online and offline mode, the DDMA announced.

According to the DDMA guidelines, only 50 percent of students are allowed to enter a classroom. There will be a mandatory thermal exam, staggered lunch breaks and an alternative seating arrangement. Routine guest visits are to be avoided for the time being.

The DDMA has said that students, teachers, and non-teaching staff living in Covid containment zones are not allowed to enter schools and colleges. It has also said that the area used for activities such as ration distribution and vaccinations should be separated from the area used for academic activities.

Schools in Delhi were closed in March last year before a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the pandemic.

While several states began partially reopening schools in October last year, the Delhi government only allowed physical education to grades 9-12 in January this year, which was renewed after the exponential increase in Covid-19 cases during the aggressive second wave was exposed.
