A group of farmers protesting against the central farm laws on Saturday forced five movie theaters here to stop showing Akshay Kumar-Starrer “Sooryavanshi”.
Some of them tore up posters of the film that were hung outside the cinemas, saying they were against actor Akshay Kumar for not supporting their protest.
Bharti Kisan Union (Kadian) activists, led by District President Swaran Dhugga, held a demonstration and protest march from local Shaheed Udham Singh Park to Swaran Cinema against the showing of the film.
They forced the cinema authorities to stop showing the film and sentenced the actor for failing to speak out in favor of their protest.
The protesters added that they would not allow his films to be shown until the farm laws were repealed.
Hundreds of farmers have been encamping on the Delhi border since November last year, demanding that the government repeal the three agricultural laws – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
They claim these laws are handing them over to corporations. They are also calling for a new law to guarantee the minimum support price (MSP) on their crops.
The center, which held eleven rounds of talks with farmers to try to break the impasse, has claimed that the new laws apply to farmers.
