HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rohit Sharma achieved the best score for India in the T20I series with 159 runs
  • Rohit faced over 150 in the 3-match series
  • India swept New Zealand clean 3-0 in the T20I series

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir praised Rohit Sharma. Gambhir said Rohit had shown a lot of maturity in the way he beat at the top of the ladder in India’s 3-0 win over the Black Caps.

Rohit Sharma topped the run scorer charts with 159 runs in 3 games and a hit rate of over 150 in his first full-time series as T20I captain. Rohit was there from the start and it was evident how he hit a 31-ball 56 against New Zealand in his 3rd T20I in Calcutta. Rohit hit 3 sixes and 5 limits when India hit 184 after opting for a stroke, against the norm of winning the throw and bowling on a dewy evening in Calcutta.

“He’s done it year after year (scoring big goals). It’s good that it comes while he’s the full-time captain. The way he did it is a big advantage isn’t at Rohit happened, “Gambhir told Star Sports.

“Yes, he was already a captain, but was not the full-time captain. This series has shown his maturity and what he has achieved on this series is no surprise. But what is impressive is how he played with a lot of freedom despite being announced as full-time captain, “he added.

Rohit took over the T20I captain from Virat Kohli, who stepped down after India’s early exit from the T20 World Cup. While Gambhir said the 3-0 New Zealand win cannot be seen as India’s recovery from World Cup disappointment, he praised Rohit’s captaincy.

VERY, VERY GOOD CAPTAINCY FROM ROHIT: GAMBHIR

Gambhir said Rohit’s moves to bring in the weirdos early in the 3rd T20I while defending overall in Kolkata showed his maturity as a leader and his ability to stay one step ahead of the game.

“Very, very good captaincy from Rohit Sharma. Bringing Axar Patel in the third half and getting Yuzvendra Chahal in the fourth half. Those are little, little things that you sometimes just might overlook. Always stay ahead of the game and he has them Results.

“He’s someone who has won 5 titles in the IPL and now he’s started this streak on a clean swing. This is what Captain does in T20I cricket,” added Gambhir.

Rohit will not participate in the upcoming 2-match testing series against New Zealand as the star batter is rested after a busy season in T20I cricket.
