The indigenous stealth guided missile destroyer Visakhapatnam, armed with a number of missiles and anti-submarine missiles, will join the Indian Navy on Sunday.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and senior naval commanders will attend the induction ceremony, which is due to take place at the Western Naval Command, officials said.
“Visakhapatnam” is armed with lethal weapons and sensors, including supersonic surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, medium and short-range artillery, anti-submarine missiles and advanced electronic warfare and communications suits, officials said.
The ship can accommodate two integrated helicopters and has a very high level of automation with sophisticated digital networks, combat management systems and integrated platform management systems, they said.
It is the first stealth guided missile destroyer of the Rs 35,000 crore Project 15B, under which a total of four warships will be built.
The next ship is slated to enter service in 2023, with the other two slated to enter service by 2025.
The warship was designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house organization, the Directorate of Naval Design, and built by Mazagon Dock Limited.
The majestic ship is 163 meters long, 17 meters wide and has a displacement of 7,400 tons.
“It can rightly be considered one of the most powerful warships built in India,” said an official.
Driven by four powerful gas turbines, the ship reaches speeds of over 30 knots.
It is equipped with modern surveillance radar that provides target data to the ship’s gun weapon systems, the official said.
The ship’s anti-submarine capabilities are provided by the indigenous rocket launchers, torpedo launchers and anti-submarine helicopters.
The ship is also equipped for combat in nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) war conditions, the official said.
“The entry into service of Visakhapatnam will reaffirm India’s presence in an elite group of nations with the ability to design and build advanced warships,” Vice Admiral Satish Namdeo Ghormade, vice chief of naval staff, said Tuesday.
