Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over several parts of Tamil Nadu on Nov 18: IMD


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Wednesday that a low pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal is moving further west and likely by Jan.

During the next “120 hours”, the MeT division said the likelihood of cyclogenesis and depression forming over the Bay of Bengal is “zero”.

“Yesterday’s low pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal (BOB) shifted further west, lay over the southeast and adjacent southwest BOB … today, November 17, 2021, and existed over the same region,” said a bulletin.

“Further west it moves over southeastern BOB. It will likely migrate almost to the west and reach the western center and the adjacent southwestern Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and on the north coast of Tamil Nadu by November 18, ”it says.

“A low pressure area is moving towards us in the Bay of Bengal and there is also low pressure in the Arabian Sea. In terms of rain forecast, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu and Cuddalore are expected to have heavy impacts, and heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely to occur in the delta regions, “said Dr. S. Balachandran, Deputy Director General for Meteorology, IMD Chennai.

In the districts of Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram and Ranipettai in Tamil Nadu, according to the forecast of the Regional Meteorological Center, it is on the 18th on the same day in isolated places in the districts of Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Chengalpattu, Tirupattur and Vellore with heavy to very heavy rainfall to be expected.

The bulletin said it was likely to rain in most other locations of Tamil Nadu and the neighboring Puducherry and Karaikkal areas on Thursday, and it could be heavy to moderate in certain areas.

“Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea. The general public should follow whatever precautions must be taken on a rainy day. They shouldn’t venture out unnecessarily, store potable water, and drink only boiled water,” said Dr. Balachandran.

Rainfall is expected in several parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikkal by November 21st.
