In J&K, state was downgraded to UT, it’s like demoting CM to MLA: Ghulam Nabi Azad

Senior congressional leader Ghulam Nabi Azad attacked the central government on Saturday for stripping statehood from Jammu and Kashmir, saying it was like demoting a prime minister to MLA.

“Usually UTs are upgraded to state. But in our case the state has been downgraded to UT. It’s like demoting DGP to Thanedaar, CM to MLA, and chief secretary to Patwari. No smart man can do this,” became Azad quoted as the ANI news agency said at an event in Kulgam.

Last month Ghulam Nabi Azad said the situation in J&K was better before Article 370 was repealed. “We were told that the scenario in J&K will change after the repeal of Article 370, that did not happen at all. In fact, we were much better than it was ruled by different CMs, “ANI quoted him as saying.

“So we’re a big loser. We’re a big loser after the state was split in two. We are a big loser since the assembly was broken up,” he added.

On August 5, 2019, the Center revoked the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir by repealing Articles 370 and 35A.
