Karnataka CM takes stock of damage caused by heavy rain, 24 deaths reported


Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday checked the damage caused by incessant rainfall in different parts of the state.

Karnataka’s Prime Minister Basavaraj Bommai chaired a meeting at his Home Office on Sunday to investigate the damage caused by incessant rainfall in different parts of the state. According to sources, the preliminary report estimated 24 deaths and crop damage on over 5 acres of land.

Up to 658 houses were completely damaged 8,495 houses were partially damaged. At least 191 animals were reported dead. Several roads, bridges, schools and public health centers were also damaged.

The report said that Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagar and Hassan districts have suffered significant damage.

An amount of Rs 689 cr from the NDRF fund is available from district collectors and additional funding would be provided as needed.

Crops grown on 3.43 lakh hectares were affected by incessant rains in August and September, which affected 1.5 lakh farmers. An amount of Rs 130 crr has been made available to her as a voluntary benefit.

Chief Minister Bommai ordered the release of Rs 79 cr as compensation for 79,000 farmers. Agricultural officials at all levels were instructed to participate in conducting surveys of crop losses.

The immediate start of road repair work has been ordered and the repair of irrigation tanks is being carried out on a war basis.

In the meantime, Home Guards and Civil Defense Force teams have been set up to begin the rescue and relief work. The officers were instructed to increase their strength if necessary.
