The Kerala couple, who run the No-Halal hotel in Kochi, were arrested by police for attempting to murder two cafe owners and spreading hatred through social media. The couple, identified as Thushara Kallayil and her husband Ajith, were accused of trying to kill Binoj and Nakul, the owners of a cafe in Kochi’s Kakkanad, near the info park.
After the attempted murder, the Infopark police registered another FIR (first informational report) against Thushara Kallayil and Ajith for covering up the incident and luring people into spreading communal propaganda.
Thushara posted a live video on Facebook saying she had been attacked by a group of people who felt indignant about the no-halal board and the pork serving in her hotel. Thushara said she was in hospital with injuries.
This video got a lot of attention on social media. Several political leaders, including Kerala BJP President K Surendran, supported the couple.
According to Infopark police investigating the case, Thushara and her husband’s plan was to purchase a café building in Kochi’s Kakkanad. Police said this led to violence that resulted in attempted murder against the couple.
Police alleged that Thushara’s husband and his team came to the cafe to cause trouble. They reportedly broke the till and smuggled lots of items.
Ajith’s alleged accomplice, identified as Appu, attacked cafe owners Binoj and Nakul, police said. The café owners were seriously injured in the incident, police said. The café owners are now in the hospital and one of them has had an operation, the police said.
Following the incident, Thushara went live on Facebook claiming she was attacked for serving pork. Police said they tried to put a communal perspective on this incident.
The police have initiated proceedings against Thushara and her staff for reporting the injured café owners. Infopark police said the preliminary investigation revealed they had misrepresented the fact.
Thushara Kallayil and the other defendants in the case
Thushara, Ajith and Appu, who went into hiding after the police opened their investigation, were taken into custody from the Kottayam district. Police said two cases had been recorded against her, one attempted murder and another in attempting to spread sectarianism on Facebook.
