A 25-year-old boy who was carried to a Chennai hospital by a policewoman died on Friday.
On Thursday, police officer Rajeshwari was seen rescuing man Udhaya Kumar, who was lying unconscious in a cemetery in the TP Chatram area of Chennai amid a heavy downpour.
When the viral video went viral on social media, praise poured in for the police inspector’s selfless act.
The 28-year-old was reportedly found unconscious in a cemetery after heavy rains hit several areas of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, causing flooding in many areas of Chennai. In places like Egmore and Perambur, trees have been uprooted, according to police.
Kumar Jayanth, chief secretary of Tamil Nadu’s Treasury Department, said 12 people had died in rain-related incidents since Saturday.
The floods in Tamil Nadu, caused by heavy showers and the leakage of excess water from dams, claimed 14 lives. With several parts of Chennai under water until late Thursday, over 75,000 police and other government agencies were at loggerheads to help citizens.
