Oxford University said Tuesday there was no evidence that vaccines would not prevent serious illnesses from Omicron, but that it was ready to quickly develop an updated version of its vaccine developed with AstraZeneca (AZN.L) if needed.
Earlier on Tuesday, the head of Drug manufacturer Modern said COVID-19 shots against the variant are unlikely to be as effective and are rocking global markets.
The University of Oxford said there is limited data so far on Omicron and that it will carefully evaluate the impact of the variant on their uptake, echoing an AstraZeneca statement last week.

“Despite the emergence of new variants last year, vaccines continue to offer very high levels of protection against serious illnesses, and so far there is no evidence that Omicron is any different,” it said in a statement.
“However, we have the tools and processes necessary to rapidly develop an updated COVID-19 vaccine should this be necessary.”
