Punjab Prime Minister Charanjit Singh Channi announced that electricity prices will be reduced by 3 rupees per unit in the state with immediate effect.

In a press conference on Monday, Punjab CM Channi said that the first 100 units of electricity will be charged at 1.19 rupees per unit for all household customers. After that, consumption between 100 and 300 units will be billed at Rs 4 per unit.

The discount applies between zero and seven kilowatts of power.

“The electricity tariff in Punjab will be the cheapest in the country. Maximum consumers will benefit from this,” said CM Channi.

He added, “We stopped buying electricity from the GVK thermal power station, which was being sold to us for 6 to 7 rupees per unit. We were offered the price of 2.38 rupees per unit on the open market. Today Punjab gets cheaper electricity at Rs 2.65 per unit. “

The Prime Minister said that Rs 3,316 crore per year will be spent on electricity subsidies. This is in addition to the subsidies already granted to the agricultural sector, he said. “21 lakh household consumers already get up to 200 units of free electricity,” he said.
