The multi-demand peasants’ movement will complete a year on Friday, with large numbers of demonstrators gathering on the borders of Delhi to mark the occasion.
Delhi police said Thursday that security has been tightened at various border points in the state capital.
A number of events are planned across the country to celebrate the close of a year of movement.
The farmers have been camping at three border points of Delhi – Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur for a year. The movement against three of the centre’s new farm laws began with a “Dilli Chalo” program November 26-27 last year.
The center recently announced its decision to repeal the three agricultural laws.
In a statement, Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organization of over 40 peasant unions, which led the protest, said: “The fact that such a long struggle must continue is a clear reflection of the Indian government’s insensitivity and arrogance towards theirs working citizens. “
“In 12 months of one of the largest and longest protest movements in the world and in history, millions of people took part in the movement, which spread to every state, district and village in India. Decision and cabinet ratification of the repeal of the three anti-peasant laws the movement has won multiple victories for the peasants, the common people and the nation as a whole, “she added.
The SKM said the repeal of the three laws would be the movement’s first major victory and await the fulfillment of the remaining legitimate demands of the protesting peasants.
“To the appeal of Samyukt Kisan Morcha to celebrate a year of the historic farming movement with massive protests in Delhi, the morchas in the capitals and district headquarters of distant states respond in large numbers.
“Thousands of farmers have arrived at various protest locations in Delhi. In states far from Delhi, preparations are being made to celebrate the event with rallies, dharnas and other programs,” it said.
In Karnataka, farmers will block major highways. In Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, protests are organized with the trade unions in all district headquarters.
Tractor rallies are held in Raipur and Ranchi. In West Bengal, rallies are planned in Calcutta and the districts. From Friday there will also be solidarity actions from all over the world.
So far, at least 683 farmers have sacrificed their lives during the year-long movement, the SKM said.
The Morcha had written an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday saying the center should announce compensation and rehabilitation for the families of farmers who died during the movement, and allocate land to one at the Singhu Farmers’ Protest Square To erect a monument in her name.
A meeting of the SKM will take place on the border with Singhu on Saturday, at which the protesting farmers’ unions call for further action.
According to the police, the additional deployment of paramilitary forces and Delhi Police personnel has increased security in the places where the seditious farmers are located.
Law and Order Division Zone – 1, Dependra Pathak, said: “An adequate security operation has been carried out and there will be close surveillance by senior police officers on the ground. We use professional police work to avoid unwanted incidents. “
The police said that there was a meeting with the farmers’ leaders on Thursday.
“We also talk to the farmers and convince them to work with us,” added Pathak.
Police officials said if protesters attempt to cross the border or cause harassment, they will be treated severely.
A Republic Day tractor parade designed to highlight the demands of farmers’ unions sparked anarchy on the streets of Delhi as thousands of protesters broke barriers, fought the police, overturned vehicles and hoisted a religious flag from the ramparts of the Red Fortress .
Delhi police have so far collected 22 FIRs related to the violence that injured over 300 police officers, officials said on Wednesday. PTI SLB AMP RC
