T20 World Cup: Jos Buttler hundred helps England conquer Sri Lanka, dew to move closer to semi-final berth

England are setting marks with every game they win at the 2021 T20 World Cup. After England hammered in a one-sided game against arch-rivals Australia in Dubai, England showed teams can lose the throw and a total can win matches in the UAE too.

England rode one spectacular hundred by Jos Buttler and a good field performance to beat Sri Lanka and the dew at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday. England recorded one defeat in 26 runs after being 163/4 on the board and beating Sri Lanka for 137 in 19 overs.

England vs. Sri Lanka, highlights of the T20 World Cup

It was England’s fourth win in a row in the Super 12 stage of the 2021 T20 World Cup as they stand with one leg in the semifinals of the flagship event. England tops the Group 1 table with 8 points and a superior net run rate. On the other hand, Sri Lanka is on the verge of elimination after their 3rd loss in 4 games.

Eoin Morgan, who became the most successful T20I captain on Monday, and Afghanistan’s Asghar Afghan and India’s MS Dhoni turned 43.

Sri Lanka Batters began, but none of them were able to do what Jos Buttler did, play a long and effective innings. All-rounder Wanidu Hasaranga, who picked up wickets earlier on day 3, hit a 21-ball 34 to keep Sri Lanka alive while hunting.

However, Sri Lanka suffered a breakdown after losing Hasaranga in the 17th round. Sri Lanka lost its last 5 wickets for just 8 runs when two brilliant outfielders – one from Buttler against Dasun Shanaka and another from Jason Roy for a season catch to sack Hasaranga – put an end to Sri Lanka’s hopes for victory.

Jos Buttler plays a World Cup classic!

Sent to bat, England lost three wickets for 35 runs before Buttler (101 out of 67 balls) and Morgan (40 out of 36) joined hands to sew crucial 112 runs for the fourth wicket, which received 78 balls.

England lost Jason Roy (9) in the second round. Leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva (3/21) continued his hat trick against South Africa and castled the stumps of the English opener with his second ball of the day.

The script went from bad to worse for England as they lost two more fast wickets.

Buttler and Morgan kept the ship steady before planning their gear shift to help England get up to 116 runs in the last 10 overs. Buttler hit that fifty in 45 balls but the next fifty in just 22 balls, which helped England raise an above-average total that served as a cushion to deal with the rope in the second innings.
