The Supreme Court has ordered the Home Office (MHA) to deploy two more Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies in Tripura “as soon as possible”.

Votes on the Tripura citizen polls are ongoing, and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has already identified security flaws.

To ensure fair elections, the Supreme Court also ordered the SEC, DGP, and the Home Secretary to ensure that each voting booth is manned with sufficient CAPF personnel. The court instructed the DGP and the Minister of the Interior to immediately examine whether additional requirements exist for a posting and to inform the MHA about them.

In the absence of surveillance cameras, the Supreme Court also ordered unrestricted access to the media to cover the polls.

The court said: “We are also ordering and instructing that in the absence of surveillance cameras, both electronic and printed media should be given unimpeded access to full coverage of the election process.”

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court denied the TMC’s request to postpone the local elections, calling it an “extreme judicial route” and the last resort in a democracy, and issuing a series of instructions to the state police to ensure free and fair elections.

The court ordered a reassessment of the use of paramilitary forces in critical areas and warned of coercive measures if the instructions were not carefully followed.

She also inquired about details of the FIRs recorded in relation to violent incidents during the election campaign and the arrests made in those cases.

A bench of Judges DY Chandrachud and Vikram Nath said, “Postponing the election is a matter of ultimate and ultimate remedy. Without postponing the elections, we believe that the fears expressed by the lawyers on behalf of the petitioners can be appropriately addressed by an interim injunction to the State of Tripura to ensure that the remaining stages of the local elections take place peaceful and orderly. “

The Supreme Court heard a plea from TMC calling for contempt lawsuits against the Tripura government and other officials for failing to contain violent incidents against opposition parties in the run-up to the upcoming local elections.
