The comedian Vir Das found himself on the receiving end of the social media after his last appearance in the USA, where he said: “I come from two India”. A video of his performance at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington DC was shared on YouTube by the comedian on Monday, which quickly went viral online.
Vir Das took first place on the trending list on Twitter when social media users called him about “insulting” India.
During his performance, Vir spoke about some of the country’s pressing issues, such as fighting the coronavirus pandemic, rape cases, cracking down on comedians and peasant protests.
After the video was shared, it went viral online and sparked a debate on social media. While a majority of people criticized the comedian for his remarks, some praised his brave demeanor.
“He didn’t say he was from an India that Rani Laxmibai gave,” said one user.
Another user commented, “I don’t know what the fuss is about.”

who is #Come as a stand-up comedian? The photo is what defines who @thevirdas is as a content creator. A comedian with content that will twist your mind and make your heart laugh. A comedian who can stimulate thought with his brilliance on stage. # Standup comedy pic.twitter.com/k6oKTS70kW

Vir Das is traveling to the US and says so about a crowded Kennedy Center.
These are the “influencers” of our country who continue to perpetuate the idea of the “snake charmer” of India in the world! pic.twitter.com/OaFNsZynRC– Maya (Sharanyashettyy) November 16, 2021
One thing is for sure, we are not ready for any religious, political, caste or country comedy, maybe in 70 years’ time if we get a little open-minded things could change. I’ve seen Americans, Canadians, British, and Russians brutally troll their country #TwoIndia #VirDasInsultsIndia

I don’t know what it’s about, but I can tell @VirAnimals has some valid points. You can continue to criticize or change. We’re not No. 1.

It’s sad to have to say this, I pray for your safety. Thank you for saying the unheard #IcomeFromAnIndia I’M FROM TWO INDIA, but I hope the one we love won’t be remembered pic.twitter.com/4We7MzFUJF– OT7to ~ (@FarzTheOnly) November 17, 2021
Following the criticism, Vir Das issued a statement via his Twitter account, in which he stated that he wanted to remind everyone that despite the troubles, the nation is great. He also urged people not to fall for the edited versions.
“The video is a satire about the duality of two very different Indians doing different things. Like every nation, there is light and darkness, good and evil. None of this is a secret. The video appeals to us never to forget that we are great. We never want to stop focusing on what makes us great, ”he said.
“Please don’t be fooled by edited snippets,” added Das.
