West Bengal minister Subrata Mukherjee dies at 75, CM Mamata calls it ‘huge loss’


Veteran TMC leader and West Bengal Panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee died Thursday at the age of 75. CM Mamata Banerjee described his death as a “great loss”.

The senior leader of the Trinamool Congress and West Bengal Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee died on Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 75.

In October, Subrata Mukherjee was admitted to the SSKM State Hospital after suffering a serious heart attack. According to hospital sources, Subrata Mukherjee was recovering and nearing discharge, but suffered another major attack on Thursday.

West Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee, who visited the hospital to see Subrata Mukherjee, said it was a terrible loss for her.

“I’ve seen a lot of tragedies in life, but it’s too much of a loss. I was told that he will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow. It’s a great loss,” said Mamata Banerjee.

Subrata Mukherjee was the first mayor of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation. Prior to joining the TMC, Subrata Mukherjee was a prominent congressional leader and known for being close to Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
