Politicians across party lines urged the government to do the Padma Shri awarded the actor Kangana Ranaut after sparking controversy in 1947 by calling India’s independence a “bheek” or alms.
Ranaut also claimed that India only gained freedom after 2014, when the Narendra Modi-led government came to power.
Bring charges against the “Queen” actor, Congress leader Anand Sharma described the statements as “shocking and outrageous” and called on President Ram Nath Kovind to withdraw the Padma award presented to Ranaut.
“Kangana Ranaut’s statement is an insult to the courageous freedom fighters led by Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and Sardar Patel, but also a belittling of the sacrifices of revolutionaries like Sardar Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekar Azad and a few others,” Anand Sharma said in a series of Tweets.
“A psychiatric evaluation should be conducted prior to receiving such awards so that such individuals do not dishonor the nation and its heroes,” he said.
The former Prime Minister of Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, called her remarks “callous”.
Hindustani President Awam Morcha, Jitan Ram Manjhi, whose party is allied with the NDA in Bihar, said all news channels should boycott the actor from now on.
Marked the President, Manjhi said, “The Padma Shri given to Kangana Ranaut should be withdrawn immediately.
Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe said Kangana Ranaut should be charged with sedition for calling India’s independence “alms”.
“She should be charged with sedition for her statements. Your Padma award should also be revoked, ”said the leader of Shiv Sena.
Shiv Sena’s ally in the Maharashtra government, the NCP, also berated the actor for what she said and demanded her arrest.
