As a great relief for the army personnel and the people of Ladakh, the Zojila Pass was reopened to vehicle traffic on Saturday.

Superintendent of Police (Transport) M Rafi Gari said the people of Ladakh are grateful to the government for the decision and the truck drivers who are bringing essential goods to the region before the winter season.

The Zojila Pass, the second coldest road in the world, is the strategic link between Ladakh and Srinagar and the rest of India. However, the region is not independent of the weather, especially not to Leh, the capital of the Union Territory of Ladakh.

Currently the Zojila tunnel between Baltal and Minamarg on the Srinagar-Leh section is under construction and should be completed by 2024. When completed, the tunnel will provide a year-round link between Leh and Srinagar.
