A six-year-old girl was allegedly sexually abused by her neighbor in the city of Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, and then murdered on Friday The Hindustan Times reported.

The police arrested the defendant, 38-year-old Amjad, who confessed to the crime. The girl’s body has undergone an autopsy and the report is expected, police said.

WHAT HAPPENED?

According to Hapur Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarvesh Mishra, the girl left her house to buy something on Thursday when the defendant lured her into his house, which is barely 50 meters from hers.

“The defendant, a worker, sexually abused her and then killed her. His wife and two children were not at home at the time of the incident, ”ASP Mishra is quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying.

When the girl did not return home, her family began a search and reported to the police on Friday.

After neighbors complained about an unpleasant smell coming from one of the houses on Saturday morning, the police team visited the site. They found the main gate of the house locked. The police broke the lock and ransacked the house. They found the girl’s body in a suitcase.

The defendant was arrested in Trilokipuram Village, which falls under the Hapur Nagar Police Station, whereupon he confessed to the crime, the police officer said. The police also claimed he was a drug addict.

During the arrest, police reportedly had to tie a cordon around the defendant to protect him from an angry mob of locals. “He could have been lynched, the public was extremely angry,” ASP Mishra was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
