Trinamool Congress chairman Mukul Roy made a faux pas on Friday when he said the BJP would win the upcoming West Bengal citizenship elections by a large majority.
“The BJP will emerge victorious everywhere from the upcoming local elections,” said Mukul Roy during a visit to Bolpur in the Birbhum district, as quoted by PTI.
When others looked at him in disbelief, Roy told reporters, “The TMC is BJP and vice versa.”
Mukul Roy, 67, left TMC for the BJP in 2017 before returning to the Mamata Banerjee-led party after winning the Bengali general election by an overwhelming majority in May this year.

The veteran politician’s slip nailed the TMC leadership, and they rushed to come up with a plausible explanation for Roy’s remarks.
“Mukul Roy has lost his mental balance. He’s not doing well. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about, ”Anubrata Mondal, Birbhum district president of TMC, told India Today.
TMC General Secretary Partha Chatterjee also dismissed Mukul Roy’s statement as a crush on a sick man.
“Mukul Roy is ailing and that was probably the reason for his incoherent statements. He is not a functionary of our party. Let’s not attach any importance to what he says, “Partha Chatterjee told PTI.
This is not the first time Mukul Roy has made such a comment in public. He said the same during a press conference in September. Party and close family members say it was a slip since Roy is not in good health and has been since His wife died of Covid-19 earlier this year.
Roy rarely appears in public these days and is treated at the SSKM state hospital in Calcutta. However, the nature of his illness is still unclear. Roy’s family sources told India Today that his sodium and potassium levels fluctuate.
