HIGHLIGHTS
- Ajaz Patel chose his third 5 wicket haul in Test cricket to rock India
- Azaj becomes the first New Zealand spinner to take a 5 wicket haul in the first innings of a Test in India
- Pitch-assisted spinners from Mumbai and Ajaz Patel ran through India’s top order
Mumbai-born Ajaz Patel took his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket on day two of the current game in Wankhede and became the first New Zealand spinner to take a five-wicket haul in the first innings of a Test match in India.
Ajaz picked up the wickets of Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer on the first day of the Mumbai Test before returning to complete his fiver by sending Wridhhiman Saha and R Ashwin back in his first over on Saturday. It is noteworthy that all three five-wicket hauls by Ajaz Patel arrived in Asia.
Mumbai’s pitch, which took some time to dry up after two days of unusual rain in the western port city, helped the spinners and Patel made good money.
India vs. New Zealand 2nd Test, Day 2: Live Updates
“The reality of test cricket is that if you put the ball in good areas for long periods of time, you will see rewards,” said Patel.
“Today was my day and I’m very lucky to be sitting here with four wickets and I’m pretty happy about it. Being in my hometown of Wankhede is very special for me.”

Patel got little help from the other end, as the fast kiwi bowlers had a rare day off and fellow weirdo Rachin Ravindra, who had picked up a bug earlier in the day, went wicket-free in his four overs.
Most 5 wicket hauls by New Zealand bowlers in Asia:
8 – Daniel Vettori (21 tests)
5 – Sir Richard Hadlee (13 tests)
3 – Tim Southee (13 tests)
3 – Ajaz Patel (7 tests) *
“Poor Rachin got sick with an insect this morning and he fought his way outside all day, which was so impressive from the young man that he was able to assert himself and really show his character,” said Patel of his litter partner in the last one Game when the two drew New Zealand.
