The United Nations headquarters in New York City has been locked for several hours on Thursday after a man paced up and down one of the main gates with a shotgun.

The man, who appeared to be in his 60s, was taken into custody without incident around 1:30 p.m., about three hours after police said he was first spotted outside a security checkpoint on First Avenue in Manhattan.

During the stalemate, the man was holding an object aimed at his own neck, possibly a firearm.

The gates on the fence surrounding the UN complex were closed and the man did not appear to be trying to break through the security area.

According to the police, there was no danger to the population.

People at UN headquarters were initially told to protect themselves on the spot, but were later allowed to move around the complex and come and go from other entrances.

The UN General Assembly and the Security Council met on Thursday.

UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said there was “no evidence” that the man was a current or former UN employee.

Details including criminal charges were not immediately available.
