Speaking on the Agenda Aaj Tak in New Delhi on Saturday, the BJP’s National President JP Nadda spoke about the repeal of agricultural laws, UP polls and his experience with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Excerpts:
Q: FIVE STATES, INCLUDING UP, GO TO THE CHANGES. HOW PREPARED IS THE BJP NATIONAL PRESIDENT?
At BJP the whole party is prepared and not just the president. Our party is always ready, not only for elections, but for all situations, including social ones. We work 24×7, 365 days for the expansion of the party and the growth of its workers. We are an ideology-based party that doesn’t just want to bring about social changes in the country. During Covid, all parties disappeared, only BJP was there. Our many workers worked. When we are in the opposition, we raise public questions from day one. When we’re in government, we keep our promises from day one. The party and the government both monitor the implementation of the manifesto.
As for UP, the day Yogi ji became CM, we started to work. Now that the elections are on, other parties have woken up, but we’ve come a long way on our way. The party is prepared.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR ADDED VALUE TO THE PARTY’S STRATEGY?
That is the difference in thinking. There is a lot of one-upmanship in other parties. We think collectively and in continuity. I don’t have to do anything else. We are speeding up what has been done. I will give you an example. Rajnath Singh ji said, each stand, 10 youths. This was a new process. Nitin Gadkari ji pushed it forward. Amit Shah ji said both of them, 20 Dalit workers, 20 women, 20 OBC workers, 20 youths, 20 economically backward people. He brought everyone together. We took this to the booth committee. There are 10.40 lakh voting booths and we have reached 8.5 lakh. I have to bring it to 10.40 lakh. It’s an ongoing process. When we in UP have the guidance of Yogi ji and the blessings of Modi ji, our staff will translate this into letters and spirit. My strategy is to network all areas of society. We have to take our work to everyone.
Q: THE PEOPLE SAY MODI JI AND AMIT SHAH JI DECIDE EVERYTHING. CAN THE PRESIDENT CHANGE THE STRATEGY?
We think collectively. if Modi ji has an idea, he will discuss it. This is followed by a discussion with the parliamentary board members. Then it goes on. What is ultimately filtered is presented by the PM. He is the leader, his thoughts matter most, but he takes everyone with him.
Q: YOU WORKED WITH HIM AS MINISTER. AND NOW YOU ARE THE PARTY PRESIDENT. HAS SOMETHING CHANGED? THE WAY LOOKS OUT OR SPEAKS?
When I was 29 years old and was the President of Yuva Morcha, he was my all-Indian general secretary in charge. I’ve been working with him ever since. I later became an opposition leader in Himachal, and he became my superior. I learned a lot from him. I learn every day. He not only leads politically but also personally. He has suggestions on how we should behave in everyday life. How we can use every minute for the nation, he inspires us. It hurts him deeply when a young person deviates from his path. He also gives suggestions for our health. He says think 10 times before you speak. When you’ve spoken, make your commitment. He tells us a lot in informal education. I was a naughty kid. He had this relationship with so many people. He takes care of their families.
Q: CAUGHT IN GANNA (sugar cane) AND RELYING ON JINNAH?
Our rivals are trapped in Ganna. Yogi ji’s government has given “Ganna” farmers Rs 1.40 lakh crore. We also paid Rs 10,000 crore from the Samajwadi party government of Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh gave Rs 95,000 crore, we gave Rs 1.40 lakh crore. What Yogi ji gave is more than the amount given by both the SP and BSP governments. 21 sugar factories closed during the time of BSP. 11 closed during Akhilesh’s time. We have revitalized it and opened it up. Sugar cane cultivation has increased in the western UP. We’re going to take this to the farmers. The farmers are also convinced. As for the Jinnah issues, Akhilesh ji addressed this and it shows his mentality. This shows how he can praise anti-national forces for voice banking policy. People have seen Jinnah’s role in partitioning India. We will bring all of this to the public.
Q: GOOD FOR YOU. YOU HAVE LOOKED OUT
The question is not that Akhilesh is not a challenge for the BJP. His mentality is a challenge for all of us. He equates Jinnah with the Iron Man unifier Patel. We challenge this mentality. These products of dynastic politics have superficial thinking. You can even compromise national voting interests. It’s worrying. Akhilesh ji a challenge for his own party.
Q: THE IMPACT SAYS YOU HAVE REPEALED THE AGRICULTURAL LAWS BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID OF ELECTION RESULTS AND NOW THE FARMERS ARE NOT ENDING THEIR PROTEST.
It was not an all-India peasant agitation. This was done by specific people in some areas. Three states have voted since the start of the agitation. The BJP and its allies formed governments in three of these states. In West Bengal our share of the vote rose from 3% to 38%. We lost in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. We were never in power there. During that time we had 100 surveys. BJP won 60. BJP won all of the local polls across the country. We won the UP Zila Parishad election. We won in Rajasthan.
Prime Minister Modi showed generosity and warmth that we will repeal the law if farmers are unwilling to listen to us. It was a grand gesture. We weren’t afraid. It’s a party of 18 million people, there is nothing to worry about.
Q: FARMERS ASK FOR MSP WARRANTY LAW
Why didn’t you make this request during UPA’s time? Because BJP is the government that is responsible and sensitive. Modi ji gave Kisan Nidhi, health cards, Swamitya Jojana, pensions to farmers. A high level committee for MSP will be established. It’s not that we couldn’t convince the farmers; they didn’t want to understand.
Q: YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT PRIYANKA GANDHI.
There is a difference between a guide and a reader. Leader does not read from a written script. Four months before the elections, you can only be a reader, not a guide. We are happy that these leaders who never went to the temple are making speeches with “chandan” on their foreheads.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR PREDICTION FOR UP SURVEY?
BJP will win more than 300 seats.
