CBSE apologized for an inappropriate question asked in today’s Class 12 Sociology Committee exam. The CBSE board exams for Term 1 are now running for grades 10 and 12. Today was the first major CBSE grade 12 exam.

The sociological paper question was:

“The unprecedented scale and spread of anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat in 2002 was under what government?”

In the MCQ-based paper, there were four options: Congress, BJP, Democrats, and Republicans.

CBSE apologized on Twitter by saying:

“In today’s Sociology Term 1 exam in Grade 12, a question was asked that is inappropriate and violates CBSE Third Party Questionnaire Creation Guidelines. CBSE acknowledges the mistake and will take tough action against those responsible.”

“The CBSE guidelines for paper setters clearly state that they must ensure that the questions should only be academically oriented, class and religion neutral and should not touch any areas that could affect people’s feelings based on social and political decisions,” says it goes on, it says in another tweet.

According to two Twitter responses, the question was set according to the content of the mandatory CBSE textbook of Class 12 Sociology – in both English and Hindi versions:
