Centre urges vigil as Maharashtra, Delhi & 6 other states report high cases | Top developments


The center on Thursday urged states and UTs to step up vigilance as India recorded over 10,000 new cases, the highest in 33 days. The government has stressed that increased vigilance is needed amid the surge in coronavirus infections.

The Union Health Department said in a press conference that eight states and UTs – Delhi, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Jharkhand – have reported a sharp increase in Covid cases. These states and UTs have seen an upswing in weekly Covid-19 cases and an increased case positivity rate.

HERE ARE THE TOP DEVELOPMENTS

1. The government said evidence suggests the Omicron variant has a growth advantage over Delta with a doubling time of 2-3 days, the government said, citing the WHO. The treatment guidelines for the infection have remained unchanged.

2. The Ministry of Health announced that 90 percent of India’s adult population received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine and 63.5 percent of people are now fully vaccinated. The precautionary dose of the vaccine is primarily intended to mitigate the severity of infections, hospitalizations and deaths, it said.

3. Jharkhands Ranchi, Karnatakas Bengaluru Urban, Haryanas Gurgaon, Tamil Nadus Chennai, Maharashtras Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Pune, Thane and Nagpur and West Bengal’s Calcutta have also reported sudden and significant increases in cases in the past two weeks, the ministry said.

4. The Department advised these States / UTs to take immediate action such as enhanced testing in a focused manner, proactive contact tracing, and isolating / quarantining contacts of positive cases, testing and following them up.

5. Delhi reported 1,313 new Covid cases and 423 recoveries in the past 24 hours. With a case positivity rate of 1.73%. The total number of active cases is 3,081 and the total number of recoveries is 14,18,227. The state capital recorded 923 infections yesterday.

6. Maharashtra reported 5,368 new Covid-19 cases, 1,193 recoveries and 22 deaths on Thursday, bringing active cases to 18,217. A jump of 1,468 cases since yesterday. The number of Omicron cases rose to 450, with the state now recording 198 cases of the variant.

7. Karnataka reported 707 new Covid-19 cases and three deaths, bringing the total number of infections to 3,006,505 and the number of cases to 38,327. There were 252 layoffs today, bringing the total number of recoveries in the state to 29,59,926 so far, a health department bulletin said.

8. West Bengal recorded almost twice as many Covid-19 cases in 24 hours with 2,128 infections on Thursday. The case positivity rate is 5.47%, said the state health department.

9. Kerala recorded 2,423 new Covid-19 infections and 164 deaths, bringing the number of cases to 52,32,672 and the deaths to 47,441 to date. With 2,879 more people recovering Thursday, total recoveries hit 51,76,535 and active cases dropped to 19,835, an official press release said.

10. Health Minister Rajesh Bhushan said in a letter that some states have seen an increase in cases and a reduction in the doubling time in cases. “This issue needs to be addressed proactively and promptly to ensure that transmission does not spread further nor that we enter a situation of increased mortality due to the late detection of cases,” the letter said.
