All government offices in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpettu districts will remain closed and only essential services will be allowed after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) red alert.

Up to three people have died from electrocution when Tamil Nadu suffered heavy rains, causing severe waterlogging and traffic jams in several locations.
The rain in Chennai and surrounding areas has reportedly stopped in the past few hours. Due to a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal, moderate rainfall is still to be expected.
Two locations near the DGP office and Nungambakkam received more than 20 cm of rainfall, while four locations recorded more than 19 cm of rainfall.
A total of four subways were closed due to water ingress.
Previously, the Tiruvallur collector said in a tweet: “750 Cusecs of water released from the Redhills tank as a precautionary measure due to continuous rain in the catchment area, and the inflow is about 2000 Cusecs, is on alert.”
Tamil Nadu Prime Minister MK Stalin visited the flood protection room at the Greater Chennai Corporation office to take stock of the situation.
