Allahabad’s Supreme Court has asked the government to consider postponing the upcoming general election for a month or two in view of the Covid-19 threat in the country. The number of Omicron cases in India passed the 300 mark on Thursday.

The Supreme Court also urged the government to consider banning rallies and political gatherings ahead of elections scheduled for early next year in five states in the country and to take the necessary steps to address the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the country to fight.

In an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian Electoral Commission to postpone the elections, the Allahabad Supreme Court bench said: “Jaan hai toh jahaan hai”.

“The court commends the prime minister’s efforts regarding the campaign for free vaccinations in a country with such a large population. The court is now calling on the prime minister to take tough steps in view of the pandemic situation in the country,” said the Allahabad Supreme Court.

These observations were made by Judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav during a bail hearing. He found that his court had listed 400 petitions for the day and several lawyers in the courtroom had failed to comply with social distancing and mask protocol.
