Delhi reports 1,313 new Covid-19 cases, highest single-day spike in 7 months


Thursday in Delhi saw 1,313 new Covid cases, the highest one-day increase since Jan. Omicron is gradually spreading across the community.

The daily number of cases cracked the 1,000 mark after a seven-month break. As of May 28, the city had recorded 1,141 cases.

According to official information, 923 cases were registered on Wednesday with a positivity rate of 1.29 percent. The positivity rate broke the one percent mark after a seven-month break.

The number of daily cases rose to 1,313 on Thursday with an increased positivity rate of 1.73 percent, according to the latest health bulletin. No new death was recorded.

This increase is the highest since May 26, when 1,491 cases were logged with a positivity rate of 1.93 percent, while 130 deaths were also recorded that day.

The huge surge in new cases here in the past few days is seen amid a sharp surge in cases of the new Omicron variant of Covid in Delhi.

Speaking at an online press conference, Jain said that Omicron is gradually spreading across the community, and the new, rapidly spreading variant of the concern was found in 46 percent of the latest samples analyzed in the capital.

“Those people include those who have no travel experience. That means Omicron is now in Delhi,” he said.

“In fact, the variant is gradually spreading in the community and its share will increase in the coming days,” said the minister when asked whether Omicron would be the dominant variant in a possible third wave of the pandemic.

According to data from the Union Ministry of Health updated on Thursday, India had the highest increase in Omicron infections in a day with 180 new cases, bringing the total number of such infections in the country to 961.

Delhi recorded the maximum number of 263 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 252, Gujarat 97, Rajasthan 69, Kerala 65 and Telangana 62.

According to official figures, the number of coronavirus deaths in the state capital, which was so far recorded in December, is nine, the highest in the past four months.

The total death toll from coronavirus infection in Delhi stands at 25,107.

On Tuesday and Monday, the number of daily cases was 496 and 331 cases, respectively, according to official information.

Jain said countries like the US and France had the highest number of daily Covid cases during the spread of Omicron, “but the good news is that it doesn’t cause serious infections and very few patients have to be hospitalized.”

As part of the Action Plan for Graduated Response to COVID-19, tough restrictions have been put in place to contain the spread of the infection and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) will decide whether to put more restrictions in place, he added.

The Delhi government has claimed that it has prepared on a “war basis” to deal with the situation in the face of the looming third wave of the pandemic. The second wave wreaked havoc in the capital and across the country.

According to an official order on Thursday, the Delhi government set up a total of 350 isolation beds in four locations, including the Commonwealth Games village, for international travelers, their contacts and Omicron cases.

The number of active cases in Delhi stood at 3,081 on Thursday, up from 2,191 on Wednesday.

Amid a surge in cases of the newest variant in Delhi, doctors recently warned to avoid all gatherings and follow Covid-appropriate behavior, as otherwise the pandemic situation could worsen given the highly communicable nature of this variant of the coronavirus.

According to the Thursday bulletin, 189 of the 8,835 dedicated Covid beds in Delhi were occupied, including suspected cases, and 8,646 were empty.

In addition, 28 Covid-positive passengers brought from the airport were admitted to hospitals, it said, adding that a total of 66 coronavirus patients were being oxygenated while a severe Covid patient was being ventilated.

The number of accumulated cases on Monday was 14,46,415. According to the latest bulletin, over 14.18 lakh patients have recovered from the infection.

According to official information, seven COVID-19 deaths were reported here in November of this year. Delhi had four Covid deaths in October and five in September.

A total of 75,953 tests – 68,590 RT-PCR tests and 7,363 rapid antigen tests – were performed a day ago, the bulletin said on Thursday.

The number of people in domestic isolation was 1,560 on Thursday, down from 1,068 the day before, and the number of containment zones in the city was 645, up from 502 on Wednesday, it said Bulletin.
