- Ishant Sharma dislocated her left little finger
- Ravindra Jadeja sustained an injury to her right forearm
India’s vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, fast bowler Ishant Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja were all excluded from the second test in Mumbai due to injuries sustained in the first test in Kanpur. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the announcement before the throw, which was delayed due to a wet outfield at Wankhede Stadium.
Rahane, whose place in the squad has been the subject of intense speculation, suffered “light strain on the left thigh muscles”. The BCCI said the right-handed batsman took the blow when he pitched on the final day of the first test. “Because he has not fully recovered, he was excluded from the 2nd test in Mumbai. His progress is being closely monitored by the BCCI’s medical team,” the BCCI said.

Rahane was the team captain in the first test, which ended in a draw. Regular skipper Virat Kohli, who was returning for the second test, and Rahane’s poor form with the racket had led to speculation that the latter might be dropped to accommodate Kohli.
Cheteshwar Pujara, who was also seen as a candidate to get the blow, if not Rahane, was runner-up for the first Test. The BCCI has yet to indicate whether it will continue the role in the second test.
Ishant, meanwhile, dislocated his left little finger on the last day of the first test, while Jadeja sustained an injury to his right forearm, the BCCI said.
“After the scans, he was diagnosed with swelling on his forearm. He was recommended to rest and will therefore be excluded from the 2nd test in Mumbai,” the board said in its statement.
