IPL 2022: KKR retain Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakravarthy


IPL 2022 Retentions: Kolkata Knight Riders retained 4 players, including two foreign stars, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, and spent Rs 42 crore ahead of the mega auction. Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakravarthy were also adopted by the 2-time masters.

The Kolkata Knight Riders announced their 4th retention for the 2022 IPL on Tuesday. The two-time champions held back the West Indian all-rounder Anrdre Russell, the mystery spinner Sunil Narine along with the Indian players Vekatesh Iyer and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.

Kolkata Knight Riders have spent Rs 42 crore on the withholdings prior to the mega auction that will take place before the new season. KKR has managed to keep the core that has served them well over the years as Sunil Narine who was part of their winning teams.

However, KKR has not kept players like their captain Eoin Morgan, opening player Shubman Gill, former captain Dinesh Karthik and Pat Cummins who has been the most expensive overseas player in the past. National names like Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi and the former U-19 world champions Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti.

KKR has also failed to keep veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh and left wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

The Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL in 2012 and 2014 under Gautam Gambhir’s captain. The former champion had a slump but reached the final of the 2021 IPL in the UAE under Morgan. KKR lost to the Chennai Super Kings in the second of the new season despite a breathtaking comeback.
