Night curfews are back. List of states have imposed curbs amid Omicron threat


As India experiences a surge in coronavirus cases, several states imposed a night curfew to control the spread of the contagious disease.

On Sunday, 31 new cases of the Omicron variant were reported from Maharashtra, while Kerala reported 19 more cases. Telangana, Chandigarh and Haryana reported three, two and one Omicron cases, respectively.

Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh also registered Omicron cases for the first time. Maharashtra is the hardest hit with 141 Omicron cases.

Here is a list of states that have imposed Covid restrictions amid the Omicron threat.

NIGHT HOUSE FRONTIER IN DELHI

Delhi imposed a night curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday comes into effect on Monday. Delhi reported 290 new coronavirus cases and one death, while the positivity rate rose to 55 percent. The number of coronavirus cases has increased in the state capital in recent days.

Karnataka announced a night curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for 10 days with effect from December 28th. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting of senior ministers and officials chaired by Prime Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

“From December 28th, initially for about ten days, we would like to declare a night curfew, citing Section 144 from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next morning,” said Health Minister Dr. K. Sudhakar.

NIGHT CLOSINGS IN ASSAM

The government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam announced a night curfew However, from 11:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. across the state, there is no confirmed case of the Omicron variant in the state.

NIGHTLY HOUSE LIMIT IN HARYANA

Meanwhile, Haryana imposed a night curfew on Friday and restricted passenger traffic from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. The state government has also banned the gathering of more than 200 people in public places and events. The order came into effect from December 25 to January 5, 2022.

The Prime Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, ordered a night curfew in the state from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. “Further action will be taken if necessary,” said Chouhan.

The Gujarat government has extended the night curfew in eight cities by two hours, effective December 25th. The curfew should apply from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. instead of 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. The new time is introduced in the cities of Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Gandhinagar.

MAHARASHTRA ISSUES NEW COVID-19 RULES

Maharashtra, the hardest hit, imposed a curfew in the state that banned more than five people from gathering between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. A capacity of 50% is allowed for gyms, spas, hotels, theaters and cinema halls. The government said the measures were imposed amid possible overcrowding during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
