United Nations Headquarters in New York was cordoned off Thursday during a police battle with a lone man who appeared to be holding a gun in front of the venue, officials said.
“The UN headquarters is closed, there are police operations,” said a UN spokesman for the AFP news agency.
Pictures showed armed police surrounding the man standing on a sidewalk with a gun in hand.
According to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the man threatened suicide in front of one of the building’s entrances.
The avenue along the UN headquarters was closed to traffic, but the meetings inside were not immediately affected.
“Because of a police investigation, avoid the area 42 Street and 1st Avenue. Be prepared for ambulances in the area,” said the New York police on Twitter.
