India slipped to their first-ever ODI series in South Africa after the hosts sealed a thrilling win in the final ODI of the three-game series in Newlands, Cape Town on Sunday. A 4-run victory in the third and final ODI at Newlands, which came after two stunning victories in their first two ties, gave hosts South Africa a historic 3-0 victory over India in 50-over format.

KL Rahul became only the fourth Indian captain to be affected by a whitewash in an ODI series of 3 games or more, following Kapil Dev, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Deepak Chahar, who also took two wickets with his tempo bowling to bowl South Africa for 287, was involved in a 55-run eight-wicket stand but it went for nothing.

South Africa vs India, 3rd ODI: Highlights from Cape Town

Earlier in the day, India got off to a bad start as they lost captain KL Rahul early on when Lungi Ngidi scored for the hosts in the fifth over. Veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan then hit his 35th ODI 50 and joined forces with ex-captain Virat Kohli as the duo added 98 runs for the second wicket to steady India in the pursuit.

Andile Phehlukwayo then batted twice in the 23rd over to sack Dhawan for 61 and Rishabh Pant for a duck. Kohli then played a good hand and hit his 64th ODI 50, but fell 35 runs short of his 71st International 100 when Keshav Maharaj outsmarted the star batter in his last over. With Kohli gone, India lost Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav after both batters made good starts.

The Kock 124 helps the SA post 287

Earlier, India ejected South Africa for 287 after opener Quinton de Kock netted his 17th ODI hundred and Rassie van der Dussen hit another high-profile fifty in the final game of the series.

De Kock hit 124 balls from 130 and forged a 144-run stance with van der Dussen for the fourth wicket before Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal slowed the home side’s goal by sending both batsmen back in quick succession.

De Kock came out with a short ball from Jasprit Bumrah (2/52) and gave Shikhar Dhawan an easy deep square leg catch and then Chahal van der Dussen had brilliantly caught from Iyer at depth.

David Miller scored a 39-run knock before Prasidh Krishna struck twice in the last over to end the South African innings with one ball. With its sixth ODI century de Kock equals AB de Villiers Record by a South African to score most hundreds against India.
