A 36-second video posted by the Congress party on Twitter has sparked conversation. It is speculated that the party may have just unofficially declared Charanjit Singh Channi as their candidate for the Punjab prime minister.
Both CM Channi and Punjab Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu have expressed that the party should enter the election campaign with a Prime Minister’s face.
However, the Congressional High Command has shied away from taking a clear stand for the top post despite fierce competition among the leaders of its Punjab unit.
what’s in the video
The video is captioned: “Punjab speaks, now with hand (symbol of Congress) – will strengthen every hand”.
It stars actor Sonu Sood speaking about the qualities of an ideal prime minister. What follows are clips of CM Charanjit Singh Channi with background music similar to the score of a Bollywood film. No other leader of the Punjab Congress appears in the video.
“The real Chief Minister or the real King is the one who is forcibly placed in the chair. He doesn’t have to fight. I don’t have to tell him I’m the Chief Minister’s nominee, I deserve it. He should be someone who’s a backbencher. He’s someone who comes from behind and is told he’s worthy (of the post), whoever that becomes can change the country,” Sonu Sood says in the video.

The promo team posted a video: source
Interestingly, the video was also retweeted by the Punjab Congress using its official Twitter handle.
Many responded to the video by suggesting that Congress had decided to endorse Charanjit Singh Channi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate in the upcoming general election.
Even more interesting is the fact that the Congress tweeted the video just hours after Arvind Kejriwal, leader of the CM Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, said he would proclaim the party Prime Minister candidate in Mohali on Tuesday.
A source close to Navjot Sidhu said the video was the work of the Congress party’s “publicity team” and social media warroom.
“They often edit clips and post them on social media to generate buzz.”
Also, the source claimed not to read too much into it. The Congress Party social media team also tweets featuring Channi and Sidhu from time to time. This should not be taken as an official announcement or sanction by the Congress Party high command, the source said.
