In Karnataka, a family of members of a right-wing extremist group was attacked on charges of religious conversion.

Members of a far-right Hindutva group allegedly attacked a family, accusing them of converting their neighbors in the Belagavi district of Karnataka to Christianity.

The incident occurred on December 29 in the Mudalagi district of Belagavi district. Pastor Akshaykumar Karaganvi is said to have been praying in his apartment when members of the far-right group stormed his house and asked him to end the prayer session. They accused the family of illegally converting their neighbors and attacked them.

In her complaint to the police, the pastor’s wife, Kavita, alleged that vigilante groups pelted hot curry at a woman who is currently being treated for burns in a Belagavi hospital. The complainant also alleged that another woman who tried to bring the situation under control had also been attacked.

Following the incident, Ghataprabha police registered an FIR against seven defendants identified as Shivanand Shivalingappa, Ramesh Dandapur, Parasappa Babu, Fakirappa Bagewadi, Krishna Kantikar, Chatan Rajendra and Mahantesh Basalingappa. The men are all residents of Mudalagi.

The defendants were placed under different sections of the IPC, such as sections 143 (riot), 448 (trespassing), 323 (voluntary violation), 392 (robbery), 506 (criminal intimidation) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (prevention of atrocities) Law.
