IPL 2022: Lucknow franchise signs captain KL Rahul for Rs 17 crore, pick Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi


IPL 2022: The Lucknow franchise hired former Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul as captain and paid the star batter Rs 17 crore. They also selected Marcus Stoinis at Rs 9.2 crore and Ravi Bishnoi at Rs 4 crore.

The new Indian Premier League franchise from Lucknow on Friday announced its three draft picks ahead of the 2022 IPL season, which will see up to 10 teams compete. Owned by RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, the Lucknow team chose KL Rahul as their captain, also taking with them Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi.

RPSG Group Chairman Sanjiv Goenka announced the 3 signings on Friday following India’s ODI series loss to South Africa in Paarl.

Lucknow selected KL Rahul at Rs 17 crore while Marcus Stoinis was selected at Rs 9.2 crore. On the other hand, former Punjab Kings bowler Ravi Bishnoi was picked at Rs 4 crore.

Purses left for the IPL 2022 auction: Rs 58 crore

The IPL 2022 auction will take place on February 12th and 13th. The 8 existing franchises each announced a maximum of 4 retained players last year as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave the 2 new franchises until January last week to select their 3 draft signings.

IPL 2022 will have two new teams – one from Ahmedabad and the other from Lucknow. The Ahmedabad team will be owned by CVC Capital. CVC was one of two companies that won bids to own the two new franchises that will play in the IPL starting next season. While their bid of Rs 5625 crore helped them win the Ahmedabad franchise, RPSG Group won the Lucknow franchise with a bid of Rs 7090 crore.

KL Rahul gets a big paycheck in Lucknow

KL Rahul, who has been one of the most consistent players with the racquet in the IPL over the years, had taken over the Punjab Kings captaincy in IPL 2020. However, after two unsuccessful campaigns with Punjab, Rahul tried to switch to a new franchise.

Punjab Kings agreed to Rahul’s request and released him when they announced their retention for IPL 2022 in December 2021. The Punjab based franchise chose Mayank Agarwal as captain and retained him along with Arshdeep Singh
