Met dept could not predict surprise rainfall, says TN CM Stalin

A day after over 8 inches of rain fell in several parts of Chennai, Tamil Nadu Prime Minister MK Stalin said on Friday that the meteorological department usually provides information on the likelihood of rainfall, but it could handle the heavy showers on Thursday do not predict.

After Stalin investigated initiatives to drain rainwater from several flooded locations with high-powered engines, Stalin accused the previous AIADMK regime of not taking adequate steps to strengthen infrastructure and prevent waterlogging.

The CM expressed confidence that waterlogging issues would be addressed before the next rainy season, saying that the IMD usually provides information (to the government) on the likelihood of rainfall.

However, they couldn’t predict the heavy rains in Chennai on December 30th and it came unexpectedly, he told reporters.

When asked about surprising rainfalls and whether there were problems with the provision of the weather forecast and whether the state government would submit a representation to the center for equipment change in the IMD regional center here, he said that this was the job of the union government.

“However, since you raised the matter, the Tamil Nadu government will remind the center.” There were more than 8 inches of rainfall in several areas of Chennai on Thursday, he said.

When asked about the CM’s comment, an IMD (Chennai) official told PTI that given various technical details and practical difficulties, it is not always possible to make a one hundred percent accurate prediction.

An IMD weather forecast (issued December 30th at 12:30 pm) had said: “Thunderstorms with moderate rain are likely to occur in some places over the coast of Tamil Nadu. Moderate rain thunderstorms are likely to occur in many locations across the Villupuram, Cuddalore and Delta, Puducherry and Karaikal counties. Light rain is also likely to occur in isolated locations over the counties of Tamil Nadu. ”For the second straight day, people here battled flooding and stench in a number of areas as rainwater was mixed with sewage.

Since it continued to rain here and in several suburbs, there were also traffic jams.
