Samajwadi Party to field Brahmin candidate against Yogi Adityanath?


In an attempt to stage a massive duel in the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi party is likely to field a Brahmin candidate against Yogi Adityanath of the Bharatiya Janata party from his home territory, the seat of Gorakhpur.

The opposition contends that Thakurs are favored while Brahmins are angered by the ruling Yogi government and putting up a Brahmin candidate against the CM itself at this point could be a master move by Akhilesh Yadav. The Gorakhpur municipal seat, despite being a Saffron party stronghold, has already made headlines after Azad Samaj Party (ASP) founder and Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was finally selected for competition against incumbent CM Yogi Adityanath had been determined.

According to Samajwadi party sources, Subhavati Shukla, the wife of the late Upendra Dutt Shukla, the BJP vice president, is likely to fight CM Yogi, being a Brahmin face while the latter is a Thakur face.

Remarkably, Subhavati had joined the SP with her two sons on Thursday evening. The former prime minister of Uttar Pradesh and head of the Samajwadi party even hinted at her candidacy against Yogi during a press conference.

What did Akhilesh Yadav say?

“Many candidates applied for the seat, and a Brahmin family also came to meet me,” said Akhilesh Yadav.

Soucres claim that if SP puts up a Brahmin face against a Thakur Immolation BJP Neta, he could bring in Brahmin votes for Akhilesh Yadav.

It is worth noting that Upendra Nath Shukla was a well-known Brahmanic face of the saffron party in Gorakhpur. He died of cardiac arrest at the age of 60.

Specifically, the municipal seat in Gorakhpur will go to vote on March 3 in the sixth phase. Radha Mohan Das Agarwal of the Bharatiya Janata Party is currently holding the seat. He won it four times.

Gorakhpur is located in eastern Uttar Pradesh which has 160 assembly seats.

In 2017, the BJP won 115 of those 160 seats, the Samajwadi party 17, the Bahujan Samaj party 14, and the Congress two and other parties/independents 12.
