A probe was ordered into the Mass rush at the shrine of Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir’s Katra on Saturday, in which 12 people were killed and 20 others were injured.
“A high-level investigation into today’s onslaught has been ordered. The Committee of Inquiry is chaired by the Chief Secretary (Home) with ADGP, Jammu and Divisional Commissioner Jammu as members, “said Jammu and Kashmiri Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha in a tweet.
He also mentioned speaking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Interior Minister Amit Shah and briefing them on the tragedy.

LG Manoj Sinha also announced a voluntary gratuity of Rs. 10 lakh each to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the onslaught and 2 lakh for the injured. “The shrine board pays the treatment of the injured,” he said.
Ex-gratia of Rs.10 lakh each would be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives to the mass onslaught, and Rs.2 lakh to the injured. The shrine board bears the costs of treating the injured.

The onslaught was reportedly sparked by a large crowd of believers outside the famous Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on the Trikuta Hills in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on New Year’s Day. The onslaught occurred shortly after midnight near gate number three outside the sanctuary of the shrine.
The police launched a rescue operation to evacuate the people. The authorities said the situation is now under control.
In a statement, Dr. Gopal Dutt, Block Medical Officer, Community Health Center, the victims were from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and one from J&K. The injured were taken to Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital for treatment.
Officials told PTI that four of the injured were in “critical” condition.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to the bereaved and assured the injured of all possible medical help and assistance.
“Very saddened by the loss of life due to an onslaught in Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. Condolences to the bereaved taking stock of the situation,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
Prime Minister Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the mass panic while the injured would be given 50,000 rupees. The aid would be released from the Prime Minister’s National Aid Fund (PMNRF).

Congressman Rahul Gandhi also expressed his grief over the incident. He said: “The rush to the Mata Vaishnodevi Temple is sad. My condolences to the families of the deceased. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
