Twelve people died and 15 others were injured in the onslaught in front of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi districts early Saturday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and LG Manoj Sinha announced a voluntary gratuity totaling Rs 12 lakh to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the onslaught.

Vaishno Devi rushed 12 dead, 15 injured
At least 12 people were killed and 15 injured in a mass rush at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine.

Eight of the 12 people killed in the incident were identified as 26 year old Dheeraj Kumar, 35 year old Shweta Singh, 24 year old Viney Kumar, 24 year old Sonu Pandey and 38 year old Mamata, 35 year old Dharmveer Singh, 38 year old Vaneet Kumar and 30 year old Arun Partap Singh.
What led to the onslaught of Vaishno Devi?
Preliminary information from the scene suggests an altercation has broken out between some boys and a mass rush situation broke out within seconds, Jammu and Kashmiri Police Director-General Dilbag Singh said on Saturday.
According to official sources, the onslaught occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning near gate number three outside the shrine sanctuary on the hills of Trikuta.
ThatTampede was sparked by a great rush of devotees who had come to pay their respects to mark the beginning of the new year. Meanwhile, government sources told India Today TV that a scuffle between two groups led to the mishap.

Ex gratia declared for the relatives of the victims
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha announced a total of Rs 12 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the onslaught.
PM Modi announced a voluntary payment of 2 lakh rupees each to the relatives of the victims and said that 50,000 rupees would be given to the injured. The aid would be released from the Prime Minister’s National Aid Fund (PMNRF).
Later in a tweet, Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha said that those who lost their lives in the onslaught will receive a thank you gift of Rs 10 lakh each and announced Rs 2 lakh of the injured. “The shrine board pays the treatment of the injured,” he said in a tweet.
JK LG Sinha ordered probe
Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha said a high-level investigation into the onslaught on famous Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.

What did eyewitnesses say?
An eyewitness from Haryana shared what the scenes at the Vaishno Devi shrine were like when the onslaught took place.
He said there was no way of leaving it as there were many believers around the shrine. People started pushing and pushing and some fell to the ground and passed out, causing a panic that led to the rush.
“There was a slope people went down. I think someone bumped from behind and I saw people trip and fall. There were women and small children lying on the ground, seriously injured when people started running. I had to climb the roof of a building to save myself, ”he said.

PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi and others offer their condolences
Top politicians such as Prime Minister Modi, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi, Union Interior Minister Amit Shah and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh expressed their grief over the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to the bereaved and assured the injured of all possible medical help and assistance.
“Very saddened by the loss of life due to an onslaught in Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. Condolences to the bereaved taking stock of the situation,” PM Modi said in a tweet.

President Ram Nath Kovind said he was deeply dismayed that an unfortunate onslaught of believers had lost their lives in Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan, Jammu and Kashmir, and offered deep condolences to those who remained.
Amit Shah also tweeted: “Deeply affected by the tragic accident at Mata Vaishno Devi Temple. I spoke to J&K Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha ji. The administration tries to take care of the injured. I offer my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. “
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed his grief over the incident. He said: “The rush to the Mata Vaishnodevi Temple is sad. My condolences to the families of the deceased. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
