Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev assured Sunday that she will ensure that all voices are heard when the Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sport dies Child Marriage Prohibition Act (amendment). However, she added that she would like to see more female MPs on the committee.

Interestingly, the TMC MP from Rajya Sabha is the one only female MP on the 31-member parliamentary body which will now examine the bill to increase the legal age of marriage for women.

Speaking to India Today, Sushmita Dev said that while she may be the only female MP on the panel, the role of the Standing Committee is to ensure that all aspects of the bill are thoroughly discussed.

“The Standing Committee will deal with the age limit for women to marry. I’m the only female member on the standing committee that would look into this, but I’ll do my best to make sure the chairman of the committee listens to everyone’s voice across the board, “said Dev.

She added, “I wish there were more women MPs, but I have to say that my Chair Mamata Banerjee did and sent a female MP to this committee that will review the bill and I am open to it, anyone to listen to. “

The Child Marriage Prohibition Act (Amendment) was introduced in Lok Sabha during the recently concluded winter session of Parliament. However, the bill was referred to Parliament’s Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sport.

The draft law provides for the legal age at marriage for women to be raised from 18 to 21 years.

“The idea of the Standing Committee is to examine every aspect of the bill and hear different views and voices. It’s a sensitive matter and everyone is heard, ”said Dev.
