Amid a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in Mumbai and elsewhere in Maharashtra, state administration plans to tighten restrictions. Although there is no prospect of a full lockdown, the state can enforce a mini-lock, according to senior officials in the administration.
Mumbai and Pune have decided to close schools from grades 1 to 9 and from grades 1 to 8, respectively.

Maharashtra’s Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Uday Samant, chaired a meeting on colleges. Samant announced on Twitter that a college decision would be made on Wednesday.
At a press conference following a task force meeting, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said that anyone found without a mask would be fined 500 rupees.
Last week the state government announced new and stricter guidelines as Covid cases began to rise.
In addition to its earlier order, the state administration said after the meeting of the Covid task force that no more than 50 people are allowed in indoor and outdoor weddings and only 20 people are allowed in funerals.
Mumbai Police have imposed Section 144 of the CrPC (Prohibited Orders) on public places such as beaches and open spaces from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. through Jan. 7.
“Thirteen ministers and around 70 MLAs in Maharashtra have tested positive in the past few days. The number of daily cases has exceeded 13,000. The CM has meetings with the task force every 2-3 days. We follow his instructions. Cabinet meeting this week was also canceled as many ministers were positive, ”said Vijay Wadettiwar, Minister for Emergency Aid and Rehabilitation.
