- India will play 3 ODIs in Ahmedabad before heading to Kolkata
Eden Gardens were allowed to take up to 75 per cent of their capacity during the T20I series of three games between India and West Indies from February 16. The West Bengal government said all indoor and outdoor sports activities can take place with 75 percent capacity at the venue.
“All indoor and outdoor sports activities will be allowed at 75 percent of the venue’s capacity,” the West Bengal government said on Monday.
Eden Gardens is expected to have around 50,000 fans at the venue for the T20I games, which will see a full-strength Indian side led by Rohit Sharma take on Kieron Pollard-led West Indies 3 ODIs in Ahmedabad from February 6th before going to Calcutta.
Meanwhile, Cricket Association of Bengal President Avishek Dalmiya thanked the West Bengal government for allowing fans to compete in the T20I series. Remarkably, Kolkata hosted the third T20I of New Zealand tour of India last year, with Eden Gardens at 50 per cent capacity.
We are grateful to the Honorable Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee, Chief Secretary and Government of West Bengal for announcing the resumption of sports activities and allowing 75 percent of the spectator capacity back into the stadium,” Avishek said in a statement.
“We believe it will give new impetus to the country’s athletes.
“Following last year’s New Zealand T20I, CAB is confident it can once again host the three T20Is against the West Indies in a similarly successful manner.”
According to the original schedule, West Indies were to play three ODIs in Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Kolkata and three T20Is in Cuttack, Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram. However, due to a spike in Covid-19 cases across the country over the past month, the BCCI decided to hold the white ball series in just two locations – Ahmedabad and Kolkata.
India will be led by Rohit while KL Rahul, who directed the ODI series in South Africa, will be his deputy. Former captain Virat Kohli is also part of the squad, which has a good mix of youth and experience.
Remarkably, Rohit and his men arrived in Ahmedabad on Monday night for the ODI series.
